Croton

Croton

The Garden Croton is a striking ornamental shrub native to Southeast Asia and the Pacific Islands, prized for its vibrant, multicolored foliage. The leaves come in a range of hues including yellow, red, orange, purple, and green, often with bold veins and mottled patterns. It can be grown as a shrub or small tree and is typically used as a decorative plant in gardens, landscapes, or as a houseplant. Crotons are relatively easy to grow but require specific care to maintain their vibrant colors.

Sunlight:

Crotons need bright, indirect sunlight to thrive and produce their best color. They can tolerate some direct sunlight, but too much can scorch the leaves, especially during the hottest part of the day.

If grown indoors, place the plant in a spot with plenty of natural light, like near a south- or east-facing window.

Water:

Water regularly but allow the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings. Crotons prefer to stay slightly moist, but they do not like to sit in water. Ensure the soil is well-drained to prevent root rot.

During the growing season (spring to summer), water more frequently (about once a week), but reduce watering during the fall and winter when the plant is dormant.

Temperature:

Crotons are tropical plants and prefer warm temperatures ranging from 60°F to 85°F (16°C to 29°C). They are not frost-tolerant and should be kept in temperatures no lower than 50°F (10°C).

If growing outdoors, bring the plant inside or protect it when temperatures drop. Indoors, keep it in a warm, stable environment, avoiding drafts or sudden temperature changes.
